‘For a View’ by Abigail O’Dougherty (Highly Commended – Flash Fiction)

This piece of flash fiction was highly commended in the Flash Fiction section of our 2014 Inaugural Writing Competition.

The outlook is stunning, but the edge of the world is cloaked in descended clouds. The Cathedral is too big, too close – too loud. It reminds her where she is, and why she’s here, and what she’s lost.

Moving to the next field, she goes to confront it, unhappy and enraged by her frustrated trials. Before she can release her anger, she finds herself being sucked under by a frozen field, a frosted lake of manure. And so when she looks up, and hears the bell ring, she is forced to retrace her steps or fall.
