‘Lilies’ by Katja Garson (Third Place – Flash Fiction)

There! Slender fingers and dark, tangled hair. Beloved, betrayed eyes, long lost eyes… Gulping, I follow her. Follow her quickly – don’t lose sight! Why is she here? Why am I here? Oh mind, oh heart! No time for that, fool: the clock is ticking! She told me she’d never return; never forgive me for what I did… The Cathedral bells are ringing now. Deep, resonant, prophetic… Echoing back to the service, the flowers – white lilies, shaking pollen on my robe. I remember them so painfully. And, across the sacred music when she realised what I’d done, Vivian’s eyes.
